A Level Drama and Theatre
Drama and Theatre is a demanding A level, being both academic and practical.
You should be someone who enjoys performing, as well as writing critical evaluations of play texts plus having the academic rigour of research into theatrical theory.
The course will involve taking part in devised and scripted drama productions, as well as studying plays and playwrights. These include monologues, duologues and small group work based on well known dramatists.
Year 12
You will take part in a series of practical workshops on the theatre practitioners Stanislavski and Berkoff.
You will apply these theories to ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ by Tennessee Williams and ‘Metamorphosis’ by Stephen Berkoff. Then you will perform a monologue or duologue from a published play. The year will end with a public group performance of an extract from a published play.
Year 13
This year involves devising a unique piece of theatre based on initial stimulus at the start of year.
This is followed by the in-depth study of Dr Faustus by Christopher Marlowe, which requires a practical response and written production design, with the student in role as the director. Many of our students get involved in whole school productions , both acting and behind the scenes.
What can I do after I’ve completed the course?
This course can lead to further study in Drama, Theatre Studies and Performing Arts in Higher Education at Degree level, or may lead on to a career in the performing arts industries.
The course also complements a range of subjects such as English, History, Psychology and is useful in building confidence, improving presentation and public speaking skills in a range of high level careers such as Medicine and Law.
