Course details

This is a vocational qualification, industry relevant and geared to sector requirements.

It will equip students with a sound, specialist knowledge as well as skills for everyday use.

This course consists of 4 units to be covered in two years.

These units are:

Unit R021: Essential values of care for use with individual in care settings

This unit focuses on the rights of individuals and explores the care values to be used when working in a health, social care or early years environment, as many individuals who use services often feel vulnerable and are lacking in confidence. It provides an overview of legislation and its impact on the care settings, and covers the hygiene, safety and security matters that relate to promoting a healthy and safe environment.

Unit R022: communicating and working with individual in health and social care and early years settings

Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of how to communicate effectively, and what personal qualities will contribute to the creation of a caring environment when working with individuals in health, social care and early years settings. Furthermore you will gain an understanding of the different types of communication, the importance of good communication, the factors that influence effective communication, and ways to overcome barriers.

Unit R023: Understanding body systems and disorders

This unit will provide learners with the underpinning knowledge and understanding of three major body systems: respiratory, digestive and cardiovascular.

Through this unit learners will have gained the knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of three body systems and three separate illnesses that may affect these systems.

On completion of this unit learners will have developed their knowledge and understanding of the importance of the systems, structure, function and disorders that can affect the individual within health, social care and early years settings. They will be able to measure and interpret data obtained ot various relevant body rates.

Unit R029: Understanding the nutrients needed for good health

Food is essential to our health and social wellbeing, throughout our daily lives. You will learn the importance of diet throughout the life stages. You will have an understanding of the key nutrients required for good health from birth to later adulthood and you will be able to apply this knowledge in practical situations, for example at the end of this unit students will produce a dietary plan for individual with specific dietary needs.

All students will be entered for a 1 hour written examination paper on Unit R021, whereas units R022, R023 and R029 are coursework units and are internally assessed through a set of tasks and later checked by the examination board.
